How to spot it:
You may notice oil spots under the vehicle, a burning smell after driving, smoke from the engine bay, oil residue around the engine, or a low oil warning on the dash.

Common causes:

Oil filter housing, valve covers, oil pans and front crank seals are the most notable repairs. Occasionally turbo oil lines, and oil cooler circuits will require seal replacements.

When to call your mechanic:
Call as soon as you notice oil loss, burning smells, or warning lights. Common leak points can include valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets, oil pan gaskets, and related seals. Driving with low oil can cause serious engine damage.

How to spot it:
Look for a sweet smell, coolant spots under the vehicle, a low coolant warning, rising temperature gauge, steam from under the hood, or the cooling fan running loudly after shutdown.

Common causes:

Older engines would see coolant pump impeller and thermostat failure. New engines with electric pumps have seen a sudden failure of the primary pump.

Call immediately if the temperature gauge rises above normal or a coolant warning appears. Do not keep driving an overheating engine. BMW cooling systems are critical to engine health, and small leaks can become major problems quickly.

How to spot it:

How to spot it:
Common signs include rough idle, hesitation, poor throttle response, reduced power, hard starting, or check engine light faults related to camshaft timing or valve control.

When to call your mechanic:
Schedule diagnostics if the engine feels inconsistent or warning lights appear. BMW’s variable valve and timing systems are designed for performance and efficiency, but they need accurate diagnosis before parts are replaced.

How to spot it:
You may hear clunks over bumps, clunks on acceleration, feel vibration at speed, notice uneven tire wear, experience looseness in the steering, or feel the vehicle pulling during braking.

When to call your mechanic:
Book an inspection if your BMW clunks under acceleration, or no longer feels tight, quiet, or stable. Suspension and chassis wear affects handling, comfort, braking, and tire life.

How to spot it:
Modern BMWs rely heavily on sensors, control modules, and battery management systems. Warning lights, intermittent alerts, iDrive issues, parking sensor faults, lighting problems, slow starts, or battery drain may point to an electrical concern.

When to call your mechanic:
Call when warning lights return after restarting the vehicle or when electrical symptoms happen repeatedly. Accurate diagnosis is key before replacing parts, especially on vehicles with complex electronics.
